hello all
i just got a steal on an 2001 s60 for next to nothing.
the vin is a 58..i have found a vin 61 . can i use this engine?
i figure the difference is the the 58 is turbo and the 61 is not.
so are the blocks the same as they both are B5244? can i use the 61 block
and use the exhaust and turbo from the 58.

the engines are paired to the ECU. This is the problem with any of the 2001+ Volvos. You cannot remove the engine from one vehicle and put it into another without reprogramming the ECU. Volvo dealership is the only place you can reasonably get this done, there is another tuner out there that can do this but the cost is ~$1,000 and I don't know anybody that has had it done.
Volvo will do it at a similar price tag, but I'm sure if you go to the dealership they will steer you clear from it. Your best bet is to rebuild the engine and get it custom tuned to the engine, your cost will probably be about the same to rebuild whatever's wrong with your current engine as it would be to install, modify, and reprogram a non-turbo into a turbo car.

hey thanks for the info......if i strip the engine down to the block and use all the original components would that work. i really can't see how the block could be programed.....yet i do understand all the electronic components would be programed different due to the turbo ---non-turbo
swap. any thoughts on this

if you switch out all of the electronics and the engines were the same you could use the new engine in your existing car.
You could also turn your existing car into a "shell" or chassis only, and you could take the ECU, TCU (tranny CU), tranny, engine, and engine components out of the good car and put it into the shell and that would also work.

A little about myself, i have been working on Volvos for 28 years..
ran my own garage fixing Volvos Toyotas and Hondas. one of my friends builds and maintains vintage race cars and another a large truck mechanic.
our thoughts were there might be extra oiling in the 58 vin due to the turbo....compared to the 61 vin non-turbo....i agree with you guys that the block being the same b5244, that if all the electronics were changed the the blocks would be interchangeable. of course there may be some hole for a sensor in one block that may not be in the other. if i can't find a 58 vin i will use a 61 vin and will let everyone here know how it all works out.
