MOS2

Post by IVIUSTANG »

Hey guys,

In reference to the now dead thread: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=24989

I finally installed my MOS2 today, it mixed very well with no visible clumping. The stuff stains like crazy and is a nightmare to clean out of oil jugs etc. I have consistently been getting 440-600 KM per tank in winter city driving with my car(a lot of idling). I will certainly be keeping track of my average fuel economy over the long term. I am also doing a UOA within the next 3000 KM on my car. Motomaster Formula 1 category 4 synthetic 5w30 oil. It will be interesting to see how my car is doing with 225000 KM on it, still running like a dream thankfully. AT $3 per application which I intend on making last about 10000 KM per oil change once I switch to Amsoil, it is very affordable.

I just did an oil change with Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 and a 300ml bottle of Lubro Moly. Runs very well so far, the only noticeable being that I don't get a slight lifter tap as much starting cold. I went from 10W-30 to 5W-30, so I'm not sure if it was one or the other, or both that helped with that.

I am using an OEM filter though, and the oil light stays on for about 2 seconds after the car is started. Oil sump rings are going to be due soon I can tell...

So how does this stuff help exactly? Is it like compression restore?

It's a compound that is used often where very low friction is needed. Used in greases especially. It sort of bonds to metal surfaces (like in engines) and can sometimes really reduce wear. The biggest problem in early car applications was getting the MOS2 to stay in suspension in the oil. Now it's been made better to do that.

Major benefits? Probably not... can it hurt? Probably not. I might do a UOA at the end of this OCI to see.

One thing I will say is that the turbo on my car always used to stick from a cold start when it had been sitting for a day, it then starts spinning as soon as I move my car for a few seconds.(Turbo only stuck when the front is parked higher than the rear) Since I added MOS2 I have noticed that the turbo never sticks and always spins freely at idle after a cold start. I believe this has something to do with the lubricity of MOS2 as well as the plating effect. I do have 225,000KM on my turbo, still happily boosts 15 PSI though.

Last week I took a peek inside my oil filler cap and and was surprised. All the metal surfaces were coated, including the non friction surfaces. My oil also looked a little bit red. I have been religious with oil changes and have never noticed this coating before, is this typical "sludge" or is it a result of the MOS2? I felt it with my fingers and scraped some off and it is very smooth, the cam lobe was also smoother than anything I have ever felt before. What does this coating look like to you guys? The buildup was very thin and the chunkiness you see in places are the result of the metal texture and not the coating. I see no loose solids or sediment anywhere. Result of MOS2 or sludge?

I changed my oil almost 1000 miles ago with Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 and a 300ml bottle of Lubro-Moly. In the filler cap, I see nothing like that except for the oil color that is tinted gray from the additive.

I've never seen it look red like that. What oil are you running? I'm guessing you drive it hard?

This oil is Motomaster Formula 1 synthetic which is based on Shells synthetic, a category 3 with their good additives I believe. Driven hard for short periods, I never rev over 2k until fully warmed up though. I think the MOS2 powder is more concentrated than the Lubro-Moly you added. The red colour to me is a mystery though. One thing is certain, the UOA will be very interesting on my next oil change. Yes I will rev the car up to 6500 RPM on occasion though. We also don't really know if MOS2 is the only ingredient in the formula I added, they would not divulge that information; the colouring was black/silverish and stained like crazy though.

Yeah, it's strange because that red color really looks like the sort of varnish you get from using dino oil in a turbo car that's driven hard. But I doubt you'd get that using any decent synthetic.

UOA will hopefully shed some light!
