alternate method for 1998 S70... thanks to Max for this:

I was successful with the following method (in addition to your suggestion)
1. Press and hold odometer reset button
2. Turn ignition switch to position II
3. Continue holding odometer reset button till service lamp flashes (app. 10 sec)
4. While service lamp flashes release odometer reset button.
5. Confirm by turning ignition switch off, then on again.

Regards
Max

I have a 98 s70, but this procedure does not work on mine. The service light never blinks when I turn to Position II, no matter how long it is held down. Any other suggested methods?

This method also works to reset the service reminder message in my '02 XC. With switch in position one, hold in odometer button untill the service reminder message flashes, then turn switch to position two, and release button. I did this after my first 5000mi oil change, so there was no service reminder in the message window to begin with. :D

Hi everyone, I'm pretty sure I need that volvo service reset tool for my '98 v7xc's service light. I'm actually a new owner of this car, which has higher miles, and I was wondering if any one knows if I can get the tool a bit cheaper than the IPD one. I realize this is a bit of a shot in the dark but, perhaps there is a method other than using the tool. Any 98 xc owners out there cringing at volvo's idea to put this stupid requirement on this model? :x I'm new to these cars but buying a $175 tool just to reset the service light is criminal!! I just want to change my own oil!! Sorry for venting on this subject, and I do love this car, but if there's a cheaper way please let me know. Thanks Matthew for this site! ~Gerald
