04 XC90 - loud clanging noise before warming up

Our volvo xc90 (04) makes this loud clanging noise while idle as it is warming up. it gets even louder when we start to drive. after a while, the noise just seems tp go away. then comes back again after its been parked. dealer says the brakes need to be replaced. but brakes make loud squealing noise when it needs replacing, doesnt it? has anyone else ever had this problem? and how do i fix it?

Hmm. Shouldn't be the brakes. Almost sounds like a loose heat shield. When the engine has cooled off (and the engine is off), push and pull on various parts in the engine compartment to see if you can find anything that is loose that might be making the noise when the engine vibrates.

I have a 04 xc90 as well and have brought it into my guy 2x's for this same sort of noise. I describe it as baseball cards in tire spokes, like when you were a kid, but metal not cardboard. This happened last winter as well, when it gets down to 10 degrees or so it gets louder and lasts longer.

Mine seems to be associated to the acceleration. When I let me foot off the gas the noise almost automatically goes down to a point that you can barley hear it. Yet if you put it in neutral you don't get the noise when you hit the gas. At first I thought transmission, but I have already had mine replaced about 15,000 miles ago.

the odd part is that it will go away when the car gets warm and never happens in the summer. Sorry this is not a solution, but I was hoping my description might help find a common problem.

Any news on this issue?? I have exactly same symptoms!! Clanging noise only when cold! The noise is very loud and definetly coming from somewhere in the drivetrain or brakes?? Also audible only when accelerating.. It can also be heard as "stereo" occasionally ==> two separate but exactly similar sources?

HELP?

PS. I would like to mention that as I live in Finland, its freaking cold here all the time ==> I hate that clanging.....
