Problems with a 2001 s60 2.4T
Hi I need your help. I have a 2001 S60 2.4T I believe my ETM has gone bad again. I had it replaced in 08. The first problem I had was rough idle so I took it to an independent mechanic with a check engine light on. He said it was a 0422 code main catalyst efficiency below threshold bank 1. After he replaced the converter the car still did not run right but we did not have a code. I was then told that coil on #3 cylinder was bad so I had him replace that along with installing new plugs. The car still did not run right, but because he said he corrected the original problem he demanded payment for services rendered. This was on the 27th. Today the 28th I took the car out on the highway only to discover I had no cruise control and the car was still running rough. Idleing between 600 to 1200 at stoplights. I also noticed at 40 mph the cars rpm was at 1500 but as soon as I let off the gas the rpm's dropped to 1000. After everything I have read in this forum I believe it to be a faulty ETM, but before I take it to a dealer and maybe spend $90 I want to see if maybe the fuse for the cruise control is bad. I looked in my owners manual and it lists every fuse known to man except cruise control. Do you know where this fuse is located? A bit more information I put a can of Sea Foam injector cleaner in the car before I ever took it to a mechanic and it temporarily made the check engine light go off after a few days. On the 27th the light came back on and you know the rest of the story. Can you or anyone who reads this help me. I am disabled and on a fixed income and spending $560 yesterday I am stuck between a rock and a hard place not knowing whether to take it to a dealer or not. I would appreciate any help I can get from anyone. [/b][/b]

When I discovered the P0422 code on my 2001 V70 I replaced the aft O2 sensor and it has been running fine since I installed a new one; since your Cruise Control is not working I would assume the same as you, bad ETM.

sounds like a back oxygen sensor, probably your rear O2 sensor I would think.
Your ETM may be bad, but a bad O2 sensor could cause some of the similar rough idle problems most likely your front O2s. If your catalyst already went bad then the mechanic should have changed the O2s. When the cat goes bad it will foul up the oxygen sensors pretty damn fast. He should have replaced those at the same time.
But a mechanic is a mechanic, and he will demand payment. He's not really bound to provide a fixing service, only to do it correctly. I doubt your ETM has gone bad again. The replacement, especially 2008, would be fine.

Thanks for the replies. Wouldn't an O2 sensor cause a code or some kind of warning message. Thanks for the help. All is appreciated

most of the time a badly fouled O2 sensor will throw the CEL. Before this happens, it would be possible that your car would have a "Not ready" state for the oxygen sensors even after warm-up, and assuming you have completed the typical drive cycle. A "going bad" O2 may not be caught by the car yet as a "bad o2". It will sense a bad O2, or bad catalyst, if the reading is too low on Oxygen. If you're getting too much it could be richening up the car.

I work on these cars everyday at a dealership. Twin catalyst efficiency code, 4 out of 5 times has leaking exhaust manifold gaskets. Air pressure from the tail pipe and soapy water from below on the exhaust manifold and they'll bubble like hell. You've got to seal the exhaust FIRST, before replacing the cat, else ...what good?

Hi is there a fuse for the cruise control, I did not see it in my owners manual. I also have a error message bulb failure dipped beam. I know this is a headlight but I was wondering can just the bulb be replaced and if so how do you get to it? It is on the passenger side low beam. I just went and started my car which is kept in a garage and the RPM's went crazy. They fluctuated from 700 to 1500 I did not give it any gas and it has been sitting since last friday. Yes I am disabled, I was a plumber for 30 years until I fell down a flight of stairs which caused me to have several operations of the C5,C6,C7 and T1 Vertebrae and now I am disabled on a fixed income. I live alone as my children are grown and my wife left me after the fall since I no longer made good money. I feel the dealer will take advantage of me since the ETM has been replaced before in 08 and that is when they put the software upgrade in. I contacted Volvo of North America and they confirmed I am still under warranty because they extended it to 10 yrs 200,000 miles for this particular problem. I am on a very limited income and I cant see any way around the $89 diagnostic fee they will charge me if it is not the ETM. I really don't have a choice since I have to have my car for at the least Dr's appointments. Since I just started my car after 5 days and it acted like it did could an O2 sensor cause that type of reaction since the car was cold. I have had several people tell me that it is an O2 sensor but I am assuming they think the car is hot. What do you think . I appreciate all information you can give me concerning my multiple problems. Thank you mstrplmber

Hi Mr Plumber,
I'm watching this topic, but please keep me up to date if something turns up but you don't post it.
I can take a collection and come up with $90 to get your S60 diagnosed if you need it.
My opinion -- and I'm not a tech or mechanic -- is that it does sound a lot like your ETM. That's just my $.02 from across the internet.
Sorry I can't help more... I'd listen to Cattledog since he's a real Volvo tech.

Let me first state that I am terribly sorry that this is happening to you Mr Plumber. It is beyond my mind how a car company like Volvo is blatantly ignoring this surely dangerous problem on these cars. Yes the warranty has been extended, but once you are covered under it one is exactly in the same boat as before, a temporary fix to a real problem: the ETM on these particular vehicles is a wear/tear item which it shouldn't be in the first place. I have written Volvo about the matter (not that it will do much good), I just can't fathom how this company can't come up with a PERMANENT solution to the issue at hand. I will not let my family ride in the car simply because of this; otherwise I love the vehicle. But Volvo management obviously does not back their product and I have serious doubts that I will ever buy another one. For now though I have to keep mine running.
