Heater core coupler, how to remove??

Hey, I am having trouble getting my heater coupler out. I have a large white plastic heating/ ventilation thingy blocking the direct pull out maneuver. I hope this doesn't require a dash removal. Help I am stuck.

1997 850 T5. Heater core went out, started leaking. Decided to replace heater hoses while I was at it. Read enough on posts to see that the plastic connectors on the coupler break pretty easily so got one of those too. Sure enough it breaks versus letting go. Old one is trashed.

Got it. I forced the old one out. Found that I could cut slits in the backing material to provide more leeway. The new one went in pretty easy. I already pulled the dash once. Didn't plan on doing that this weekend.

In a perfect world you simply depress the tabs, push inward until you hear/feel the click when it releases and then, while continuing to depress the tabs pull the hoses back from the firewall.

As you found out there is a 90% chance that the plastic clips will break so, as you properly did, get a new connector kit before you even start.

Don't try to mix and match the parts from an OEM and aftermarket connector kit since they have different spacings on the shoulder of the clip.

I have exactly the same repair issue. I need to change out the heater coupler on my '96 850T. However my heater core connects to solid metal pipes from heater core to coupler, not flexible tubes. Does someone out there have a procedure for methodically removing the necessary console/dash items to get the plastic box out of the way? I have to remove it to allow the old/new coupler to be removed, an to pull back the sold heater tubes from the coupler. What a dumb design; why didn't Volvo simply allow pipes to run through firewall like on the 940 or like on many other car designs?

Once gas pedal is removed, can you shift the heater hose coupler/attached heater hose tubes to the left in order to clear the evaporator casing?
