A friend told me about this site. Just wanted to say hi and see if anyone can help me?
My wife's 2002 xc70 is having a problem with surging when it's going up hill or under load, it does not happen all the time though? It is not throwing any codes. One mechanic told me to check about the ETM re-call, but Volvo says that it does not apply to my car because it's the turbo version? Is this correct? The Volvo service guy told me over the phone that it's probably the turbo boost valve... I just want to see if anyone else has had this problem and what the fix was?

I had the same symptoms with my wife 02 S60 2.4T, the surge was a result of the turbo "kicking in" late. The dealer is most likely correct to suspect the Turbo Control Value or a leak in one of the three hoses connecting to it.
The turbo control value hangs from the side of the air box and is vary easy to replace. An "upgrade" part and instructions is available from IPDUSA, http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-S60/Perform ... -403-4235/. Note the IPDUSA part replaces the OE part but mounting it requires some fiddling. An OE replacement can be had from http://www.fcpgroton.com/.
Check the condition of the three hose, if they need replaceing, they are a PITA.

My 2005 XC70 was doing the same thing at about 80-85,000 miles. A Volvo mechanic at a dealership suggested changing the plugs. This solved the problem for me. I used Denso irradium plugs; they were about the same cost as the OEM's from the dealer.

In my experience bad plugs would result in a lost of power under load. The car would feel like it was temporary losing power. My experience with a bad TCV is a temporary gain of power, the car accelerates.
So depending on the experience, a gaining or losing of power.

I think my car did that same thing today (02 v70 xc). It doesn't do it at lower speeds unless I'm going uphill, and then today I was going about 65 up a long hill and it just lost power, I ended up going about 20, but there aren't any codes being thrown. Did you end up figuring out the fix? I really want to know because I was scared I would have to replace the transmission or something!
