transmission won't shift on cold mornings

Post by shelrobe »

2001 v70 wagon. Won't shift on cold mornings until the car heats up. Just had transmission flushed at 90K servicing. Any ideas what the problem is?

Hi, welcome to MVS.

The problem you're describing happens when the shift solenoids in the transmission get old & grumpy. Once the fluid warms up, they begin to work fine. Short of flushing it, there's not really much else you can do short of replacing the solenoids in the valve body.

Do you know if the dealer software update was ever done on your transmission?

You mean it just won't shift or is it hesitant to shift? Keep in mind that the cold operation programming of the tranny keeps the shift points up until the engine warms up for emissions purposes. After that, the programming will change to its most economical setting. On my XC, the first couple of shifts on a cold start are at about 4000 rpm, but after that they are back to normal.

Cheers,

Bill
