Matt:
I am now seeing a code which I never had before, after driving about 100 miles later with the position in CAI.
Code is P0422 Main Catalyst Below Threshold Bank1.
Any idea why and what it fully means?
thanks,
jmmxc

Jimmxc, I'd help, but like I said a few posts up, I don't know about the airbox thermostat flap. Please start a topic about it in the correct forum. This topic is about ram air intakes.

Matt rocks! ahh so much irony...matthew1 wrote:jmmxc, I can't speak to airbox thermostats. I can say that if the position of the deflector has been stuck for years and it didn't set off a code or cause a drop in fuel economy, I wouldn't worry about it. The computer corrects rich or lean conditions on its own, to a degree. No pun intended.
If it was too rich you would have seen a code and you'd have needed new O2 sensors long ago.
If you are too rich your engine will sure help you level out...
So Matt when can we see blog issue #3

Photo of the intake mouth during very bad weather - cold, slush, snow.

And this is not dangerous how? Lol.
So is it still working well? I am contemplating something along the lines soon.
perhaps not so low, but def a bit wider..

I know... it's not for everybody. But you can see the ice doesn't go that far up. Even if it did, after that bend there's a vertical rise of about two feet up to the airbox, which keeps things out via a method I invented to go with this mod I call gravity
.
I'm confident that my gut feeling about it is correct for my driving given my constant awareness that it's there.
Not to beat a dead horse, but if I was to drive on dirt or gravel, or in any type of standing water, I'd immediately disable it.

lol. Hint why I said mine will be higher. Here in Florida. Everything you just said is a daily event.matthew1 wrote:

Awesome post. We mentioned a larger intake earlier in the post, and I had considered shop vac floor attachments for a larger opening. It is already shaped for optimum airflow to the center. Anyone have something similar? Another type of attachment at the grill to cover the whole opening?
2002 Volvo S60 T5- K&N, Royal Purple fluids, OBX DP, Iridium Spark
Did something similar today on my V90.
Intake is ok from the airbox back for a N/A cruiser but the tube from the box to the front is a MAJOR problem!
The Tube from the box to the front necks down after the core support and is positioned where is sucks super heated air off the AC condenser.
Looks ok from here don't it??

NOPE! notice how it slims down after it goes through the core support.

Note the sharp 90 turn and narrow opening
Now look where that opening is pointing. It's backwards from the airflow coming through the grill and is pulling in super heated air right off the AC condenser!

My solution? I grabbed a super cheap flexible universal intake hose.

Full 3 inch tube that is now tied up flush with the top of the core support at a 75 degree angle toward the airstream coming in the grill. It was tied up and the angle tweaked after this photo was taken.

REMARKABLE difference it throttle response in traffic with the AC running as it is no longer pulling in super heated air off the AC condenser. Also has much sharper response at highway speed due to the ram air effect from drawing cooler air in the high pressure area between the grill and radiator. Takes much less throttle pressure to maintain speed it will be interesting to check mileage on my next long road trip.
