Might be buying a 940, have a few questions...

Post by arbop »

just looked at a 94 940, with a reported 154,000 miles. Looks as though the miles may be accurate, but I have a few questions that came up during my look at the car; hoping to get some feedback on them, and estimated cost to repair.

When I apply the brakes, I hear a "whooshing", or "ssshhi-ng" sound from the area of the brake pedal, inside the car

When I turning the steering wheel nearly lock-to-lock, feel a slight "rubbing" through the steering wheel

Gas gage inop, although the guy says it is intermittent

Transmission upshift light is on, the guy says he replaced the relay for the overdrive, and the OD works. I did not have the car to a high enough speed for the OD to kick in.

Thanks for all of your help!

1 whooshing", or "ssshhi-ng" sound from the area of the brake pedal
In this car the cruise control has a vacuum line to the brake pedal, I would guess the brake light/vacuum switch combo is leaking.
2 When I turning the steering wheel nearly lock-to-lock, feel a slight "rubbing" through the steering wheel. Are the tires oversize and rubbing on the inner fender?
3 Gas gage inop, although the guy says it is intermittent This was caused by deteriated wiring at the speed sensor on the rear axel on mine.
4 Transmission upshift light is on, the guy says he replaced the relay for the overdrive. upshift light? Is this the up arrow on the dash? That is the overdrive lockout light, push the button on the gearshift lever to turn it off and enable the overdrive to engage.

My 92 940 had 484k miles when retired, origional engine transmission and rear end.
