1997 s90 ....some issues

Post by zachslc »

I just bought a 1997 S90 with 179k on it. I knew it was going to have a few issues but overall it runs/drives awesome.
The biggest issue is that for some reason it has a hard time starting. You have to crank it 4 or 5 times to start it. Once the engine is running, if I hit the gas the car will stall out completely. I have to let it sit and run for about 7 minutes untill I can drive it.
The other issue, and I have no idea if they are related, is that the fan is on the whole time the car is on and stays on for about 5-10 min when car is turned off. The temp. gauge is always about half way.

Are these serious problems?

Actually it's a very simple problem causing them all

You've got a bad coolant temp. sensor. Change your thermostat as well, since that is probably what killed the sensor to begin with.

Well thank you for the information. Now I just need to decide where to get it fixed or if perhaps a friend can help me with it. I really do love this Volvo. Thanks.

It's a pretty easy fix even if you've never worked on a car yourself and want to save yourself a bit of money, but a bit of a pain in the cold because the bolts stick so I wouldn't blame you  .

It hasn't gone above 11 here today, and we have 55-60 mph gusting winds blowing around nearly 3 ft of snow on the ground. Oh yes, it's just peachy outside...
