Flame Trap and Oil Separator FAQ?

Post by bright »

1995 960

Hello,
Is there a tutorial for the whole flame trap and oil separator change?

In particular, I am curious
*how to clean the oil separator?
*What parts need changing?
*Do you recommend changing hoses from the trap to the separator to the block ?

Thanks,
Bright
Many Thanks,

I'd change the oil separator rather than trying to clean it. Mine was clogged up pretty bad, and I actually broke the top inlet port trying to get it off in the cold.
The hoses from the trap to the block should be changed as well. I'm not sure there is a step-by-step for the 960 engine, but the write-ups for the 850 I5 engine should be of some help to you. In the meantime, I'll try to find a picture of the routing.

Oh wow, the 960 system looks downright simple compared to my S70's

Thanks for the heads up Jablackburn. Could you link me to the 850 tutorial? I'm having a bit of a problem finding it.

What is that thing, and what does it do? I know that there are plastic versions (as shown) and wire ones.

The system is supposed to "vent" so that acts as kind of a restrictor/shield of sorts to prevent anything from getting sucked into it or too much pressure vented. Which is precisely why you've got an air filter. All the screen does is clog up over the years and cause excess pressure in the PCV system.

It's one of those useless bits of Volvo over-engineering that will cause problems later down the road. Most people just suggest removing it, and that picture is exactly why
