When to change v70 2001 timing belt?

Post by jnstorey »

I have read you should change the belt at 100 or 105k miles. See

This seems like a fair few miles to me. Am i doing the right thing, or am I setting myself up for a new engine when the belt brakes?

SEVEN (7) years or 105K miles so you're overdue

On my 2001 V70 I had it changed at 122,000 miles, 8 years on the belt and yes it was certainly due, cracks everywhere. I believe that 105,000 miles is almost not early enough.

Any thoughts as to whether the miles or years on the belt are more important?
I have a 2002 S60 w/ 78k miles. I figured that I have another year or two left before having to change it, but if 8 years is just as important as the miles, I should plan to do it sooner.

I believe that time is as important as mileage. One can make the comparison with tires; when purchasing 50,000 mile tires and you only drive 5,000 miles a year they won't last 10 years but rather dry rot in much less time. Your belt has been on for 8 years with lots of tension and the elasticity of the rubber wears out after some time. If I were you I would certainly think about getting it changed sometime soon.

My 2¢

I also have a 2001 XC70 overdue for timing belt replacement. Any pointers or how to's for this job out on this list? Also, where is the best place to get the needed parts for the replacement? I assume I need the belt, tensioner and water pump...anything else to do while I am in there?

For what it's worth Volvo says 10 years or 130,000 miles. Sooner won't hurt anything however.
