Location of Wiper Relay

Post by bright »

I am sheepishly writing this question.

I cannot find the front wiper relay. I've checked on the driver side of the engine bay (not in that group.) I've checked the passenger side engine bay (main fuses only). I've checked the inner driver door panel (not there.)

Could someone please tell me where it is?
Many Thanks,
Bright

It's on the relay block behind the centre console.

Is this behind the ash tray/open compartment tray below the radio?

Is there an easy way of getting to this. I have already cracked my center console once before when I was removing it to access the kick panels. I didn't see an easy way to do it, and I pushed a little to hard looking for some screws and *crack* I broke the bit that ensconces the shifter all the way above the handbrake in two places.

Thanks,
Bright

Yes! Now, should I leave it there?

Oh well, the attached shows how:

This was the way into the 700 fuse/relay box. The 960 had the fuses moved but the relays stayed there.

1995 960

Me again,
There are relays that live behind the ash tray, but you cannot access then as in the attachment. Instead you have to take apart the kick panels on either side of the center console. It's not a bad job, once you figure it out. Just a bit nerve racking as you pull plastic out of the snap tabs.

The problem is that the relays within that area look like they could power the Death Star. They don't match the relays in eeuroparts catalog. I also went along and pulled the only two that were reasonable small enough.

I have a bags full of Saab relays. I know that one of them will match.

The bigger problem is that not one of the relays listed in either box (driver front pillar door or driver engine compartment) are listed as wiper relays.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what and where it might be?

Thanks,
Bright

The information I posted was from a Volvo workshop publication. Maybe that's why the dealer takes so long to do anything - the info is wrong.

This one is from VADIS and shows the wiper relay as #8.

Thanks Bill. That makes a lot more sense.

As the plot thickens:

What does 8a do exactly? I see the listing but it doesn't make a great deal of sense. Is it a place holder?
Many Thanks,
Bright

Just to cause more confusion I have come across this configuration in another Volvo workshop publication:
960 relays in centre console.pdf
(150.36 KiB) Downloaded 300 times
These variations are all in official Volvo publications, not Haynes or Chilton. Obviously the dealer time quoted to do a job includes 3 hours to find the correct book/diagram.

I can't find out what 8a, 4 in the latest version, does. I have checked wiring diagrams and can't find anything that works through that relay.
