I have been having starting problems for the past five weeks. It has hap[pened probably a dozen times now. It seems that if I let it sit for a while it then decides to run. It has happened in the morning on the first start and also after it has been driven. Each time it eventually has started, sometimes within a matter of a minute or two. This morning I tried several times to but it seemed like this was it ..it finally died for good. After 45 minutes the tow truck arrived..and guess what?...It started on the first click! Frustrating!
My mechanic has looked at it and has no answers except keep driving it and when it doesent statr for good bring it in.
Help!

My money would be on the cam position sensor or the engine coolant temp sensor.

See my post in the thread with the Cam Position Sensor. Had the EXACT same thing happen to my Jeep a few weeks ago and it was the CPS.
Good luck.
Good luck.

FYI: the original poster is my father -- It's a '95 850 Turbo.. I've been poking around online and the CPS is pretty expensive to gamble with. Is there a way to test the old one like you can the O2 sensor before he goes out and buys a new one?

Apparently, Auto Zone auto parts chain stores will hook you up and read your computer codes for free so you could take it there and see if it's that code that it turns up to confirm. If no Auto Zones, maybe some other chain or local store will read for free. That's how I knew it was my CPS? (not sure if the CMP is the same thing). Mine was stalling after it warmed up under all driving conditions, but I never had a problem cold starting.

That's the whole problem - it's not showing any codes.

As I said, this is the EXACT same symptoms that my 2004 Jeep had. It took 10 days of this before the computer finally popped up a code too. And it only gave me a code once! So, you cannot rely on that.VolvoFreak wrote:That's the whole problem - it's not showing any codes.
Do a quick Google search on CPS failure. Your car displays all the classic symptoms to a T. True, it is over $100 for the CPS but it will only get worse over time and will stall your engine on the highway. Not to mention running rougher, spending more gas, more fumes.....

I bought a 2001 C-70 in January. I have wanted a Volvo for TEN years and guess what I get? One that won't start! Mine usually happens when anything electrical has taken place. Like this afternoon. I turned the key and rolled the windows down and came back 15 minutes later and it would NOT start. Usually does start after a period of minutes. This episode happened to me the very first time after sitting in the car and listening to the radio. It happened again after I put the top down, turned the car off and ran in the buildning. This sucks. Very disheartening after being told how wonderful Volvos are.

FYI: Update on my parents car (the original poster)...
It died the other day and would not start at all. He had it towed to his mechanic who finally diagnosed it as a bad fuel pump at a cost of 500 beans. He hasn't gotten the car back yet, but should have it tomarrow.
