Re: EGR Cleaning

Post by VolT5 »

Hi guys,
I am trying to service my EGR and was wondering

1) What is the torque spec to torque the 4 bolts attaching the throttle body pulley?

2) Does 97 850 turbos have EGR? I checked mine and it looked nothing like MadeInJapan's (https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=19549) There is no valve beneath the body???

Our 1995 has the EGR valve, but the 1997 does not. So, I guess you would be able to see it when you pulled the hose off the throttle body, or look under the intake manifold on the driver's side (U.S.)

If it has this (the EGR), which is circled in the picture, then it does- if not, then it doesn't.

MY 1994 Wagon does have one.

If you have an EGR, as depicted in the pic submitted by MIJ, I would be interested to know if you can attach the EGR to the manifold first and then attach the manifold to the block. You say the PCV has to be done any way, if you can get the manifold off with the EGR on, the opposite should apply. If it works, you could then torgue the bolts correctly.....gut en tight = snap, in my case.
The great big(brass) nut on the back of the EGR would have to be removed first and then the manifold bolts, the theory is to pivot the bottom of the manifold upwards and then remove the entire manifold and EGR together.
The bolts holding the EGR are just awful to get to and then you also have the problem of overenthusiastic tightening to contend with ! I know, I snapped one right off, if there was jail time for each foul word I used, I would still be in lock up

Tell us how you go!

Not a stupid question at all but it all depends on your emissions code. The short answer is that some do and some don't.

A visual inspection of your car should provide the answer. Cars with EGR have a stainless steel tube (about 1/2" diameter) running from the (US) driver's side of the exhaust manifold to the EGR valve which is bolted to the intake manifold just behind the throttle body. There is also a vacuum line that runs to the EGR valve from the EGR valve controller which is mounted on the fan shroud.

Do I need to buy any gaskets or other things if I want to clean the throttle body and EGR?

If you're removing them (the most effective way to do it), you will need both gaskets.

Advance Auto parts can order them for you, and they're about $1-2 each.
