It's a 2001 Volvo V70 Wagon with 179400 Kilometers(111,474.0 miles) it has an automatic transmission and is the base model. The asking price is
$5,995.00 Canadian(5,766.64 USD).The car looks to be in great shape, what I need to know is this a fare price and should I get the timing belt done.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Considering buying my first volvo
The 2001 model cars were/are notorious for transmission and etm issues. You can search for either one of these on this or any Volvo forum and read until your eyes hurt. A repair/replacement for the etm is offered by Volvo for 10 years or 200,000 miles, not sure if this applies to Canadian models. The tranny is a 3500-5k replacement, not much repair on those. The timing belt if not previously done is due and the price, based on asking price is probably average to a little above average depending on the condition of the car, options etc. My advice would be to look for an 03 model or later, most of the bugs were worked out by that point.
With that said, many people including some on this forum have 01 model cars and get fairly good service out of them. If I were buying an 01 it would have to be an exceptional car with a meticulous service history at a cheap price where I could afford to spend some money on repairs if needed. You might also look for a manual and do away with the tranny worries altogether. Good luck

I agree with otis44. 2001 is a very risky year. I suggest late 90's s40 or V series cars instead. 2003 and on is also a safe bet.

The dealer said he would check to see if the EMT had been done, the timing belt was done 20000km ago,he's going to flush out the transmission and fix the rear wiper.
The front brake rotors and pads are new,my question now is do I buy it and hope to get another 50000km out of it or should I just stay away.
My budget is $8000 and I'm looking for a wagon for something fairly trouble free.
What is the average lifespan of 2001 V70.
Any 2001 v70 owners could help me make a decision it would be greatly appreciated.

Are you getting this car from Terry Parolin? If so, he'll take care of you really well. But you still want to make sure that whatever you need done is within that warranty period he gives you. I bought my last 4 Volvos (as well as a Range Rover) from Terry and he cuts a fair deal. If I ever had a complaint it is that he his so busy with all the Volvos he sells at times it is tough to get in his shop.
Good luck,
Bill

FZRDAR,
good evening and please let me advise you kindly about my 2001 V70 experience. When I purchased the vehicle about 3 years ago I did not know anything about Volvos; well things have changed. I have invested about US$5,000 of maintenance costs into the car (mostly my fault going to the stealer; reason why I am here now) since I have taken ownership of the vehicle. As mentioned before, the 2001 model has lots/tons of problems mostly mentioned here already. I have been lucky that both my ETM and tranny haven't gone bad on me yet; once again I am spending plenty of time here. I am mostly putting lots of EASY miles on the Volvo (500 miles round trip to work on the interstate about 5 times a week), but keeping this machine running has almost become a fascination of mine and therefore contributing to this forum as much as I can. I have a 'still to be accomplished maintenance list' that is a mile long and it will take much education and advice from the forum members for myself to remain safely on the road. Once again, thank much MVS. If I could advise you about 2001 models, I would stay away and look for a later model Volvo (2003 or later) unless you want to become a regular contributor to this website (not because you want to, but because your car does not give you any other choice). It is addicting, though.

I'll repost what my friend sent me:
I had a 2001 Cross Country AWD. I spent close to $9000 on repairs in FOUR YEARS OF OWNING IT!
I did all required maintenance: Oil, Transmission, Fluids, Tires, etc.
The Transmission blew at 80,000 miles: $4000.
The stupid tires would not stay balanced.
Throttle Box Assembly: $2500.
I'm not even going to go on... TOO PISSED THINKING ABOUT IT...
I'd say avoid a 2001 unless you have a really, really good reason to buy one.

Thanks for all the great advice,I've decided to pass on 2001 V70 and planning on looking for something pre 2000, maybe an 850.
I really like the looks of the Volvo's and enjoy doing minor maintenance but not looking to sink a ton of cash into a car just to keep it running.
Thanks
Darwin
