S80 T6 '99 Down on power, but only a post O2 code

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Thats one way of looking at it. The car went to have a coil changed out on Monday. The dealer picked it up, it wasn't running right and brought it back. Mechanic said that something was messed up with either the PCV or vac lines (dealer want sure which he said), and that it was corrected.

I suspect it was PCV and that it lost oil from there. Theres a good dollop of oil on the inside of the front bumper. The oil isnt being burned that's for sure.

I'm going to reserve my panic for later :D

OK rather than appending the thread for the oil leak that is now solved, I'm appending this one.

The issue has reoccured, right after I did a PCV service. It appears that the car running well after the last fillup with premium was a fluke\coincidence. I havent scanned for codes yet (problem with OBD cable) but prior to the PCV work (when it was running OK) I had a code for the crank position sensor, random misfire (I suspect a false positive as a result of the CPS) and a pre-cat O2 heating issue (bank1). I filled the tank to the brim with 92 gas since the PCV work and the issue has continued.

When I drove the car around for about 30mins on Sunday (After the PCV work) I could eventually coax it almost to 1/2 throttle to a speed of 80MPH or so. At first I could get it up to 40-50 max, at this stage it had been idling for a while before I took it on the road.

So it seems directly related to temperature, not sure if its coolant temp, charge air temp, block temp or what. Had some issues driving to work today (14miles). Ambient temp of 0F, coldest its been since ive owned the car. It took a few attempts to start it and at first I was barely able to use 1/16th throttle to move the car, beyond this it was dead. After a couple of blocks it would get up to 10/15.

More blocks later, (Coolant temp 1/8 way from left) I could get it up to 20/25 struggle to 30. By the time the temp gauge it was in the center for a while, I could coax it up to about 40-45, but no response beyond 1/4 throttle. My drive to work is about 13 miles. Ideally 7-8 on freeway, rest on surface street but not today with those speeds obviously!

Last night I was brainstorming and I was thinking stuck wastegate solenoid, given how it seems directly related to temperature, I'm not so sure anymore. When it dies, there is no misfire or rough running, no SES light flashing it just stops producing power, is if either fuel or ignition is being cut off. I can hear a change in the induction noise, so at this point I dont suspect an ETM issue. Hope I'm right! After the run on Sunday, where I got it up to 80, when I floored it I'm pretty sure I heard the wastegates

Troubleshooting done so far:

Filled tank with 92Oct gas.
Double and triple checked all Vacuum and Turbo plumbing.
Removed MAF connectior, no improvement.

Troubleshooing yet to be done:

Pull the freakin' codes!!
Fuel pressure\Fuel filter
Plugs\Coils\Air Filter
Boost control solenoid
Boost pressure monitor
Check Coolant temp sensor

:!: Hmm. So it only happens with extreme cold. Frozen/plugged intercooler/turbo hoses? This is a guess coming from a -70 series car, I have no idea if the S80's are prone to this freezing or not. I thought I mentioned that before, but it must have been a different S80 thread. But it sounds like an air issue rather than fuel or ignition to me. Wouldn't hurt to add to your list of things to check

Well seems to be gets worse when its colder. I'e this morning at 0Degf at first I could barely use 1/8 throttle, then as it warmed up a little more. However since the PCV issue, at best its gone back was the way I originally posted, more than 50% throttle and it just dies, all I get is compression braking  back off to 50% and it picks up again, this is only when its been running for 30mins or so already, otherwise I get the same thing at either 1/8 or 1/4 throttle, depending on where the temp gauge lies. Interesting eh?

Over the last few days ive gone through each page of hreads or the S80 here. I read about some similar issues, but not quite the same as this, nearly all of them were surging or not related to temps in anyway. Most were cured with a boost solenoid. The P/N for the solenoid is the same on the V70 T5 and the S80 T6, so I'll test and or swap em.

Frozen intercooler crossed my mind too, no apparent signs of excess moisture in the inlet pipes however.

OK so I pulled the codes today (bad serial cable), no surprises. Crank position sensor, random misfire (false positive from CPS code), MAF (from when I disconnected it) and Bank 1 pre cat O2 heat fail.

Heres some of the stats at idle, ive bolded what might be out of the ordinary

Idle speed is around 650-680, seems a little lumpy at times
MAF Rate .4 lb/min
Fuel System 1 closed loop at idle, switchs to open loop when motor is revved
Fuel System 2 open loop at idle
Short term fuel trim bank 1 +4.7%
Long term fuel trim bank 1 -.8%
Short term fuel trim bank 2 0%
Long term fuel trim bank 2 -.8%
Intake air temp 96f
Coolant temp steady at 194F

Working on getting some software running so I can plot some graphs. I cleared the codes and drove it for a while, only code that came back was the O2 code P0050

It still may be worth a shot trying to clean out the intercooler and seeing if your problems disappear. Well, if it warms up there to a point soapy water won't freeze on you

SOMEHOW, it sounds like it's being starved for air. Though I wonder if a frozen O2 sensor might do that if the heater's not working...hmm.

1) Change the bad O2 sensor.
2) Use a bottle of Techron Fuel System Cleaner.
3) Change the fuel filter.
4) Change the spark plugs.
5) Change the CPS.

Yea, thats basically my plan of attack. Ill start with the plugs and filters this weekend. CPS and O2 will have to wait ($). I know there's a lot of variables there, but even with these issues the car was pulling good. Whats weird is that it ran bad, then good for a two weeks or so and now is bad again :S

Today I logged actual throttle vs MAF reading. Looking at this, I'm either missing air\boost for some reason or the MAF is borked.

Did some research and 20Lb/min isn't all that bad it seems, translates into 200BHP depending on where you look....this was all around 2500-3000 RPM too. Did the same test in the T5 and it peaked at 22Lb/min, but it hauled of course as opposed to the T6 which slows down with engine compression. For now I'm ruling air supply out.

Fuel or ignition is all thats left. I can't see an ignition problem manifesting itself on a Coil On Plug motor on all the cylinders at the same time without some sort of rough running.

So on to fuel pressure I guess, starts better from cold if I hold the gas down. Also, from memory the car started up when the fuel tank got low, might be a clogged filter, that would be nice.....have to see if I can get my greasy mits on a fuel pressure gauge.

Still only have a code for the O2 sensor.

OK changed the Air & Fuel filters last weekend, no change. Also popped some techron in there on Fri. Noticed that my instant MPG seems to reflect the airflow over the MAF when I gun it, so again , im leaning towards fuel delivery. Need to get a fuel pressure tester and check the rail. What pressure should I be seeing? I have the spark plugs, didnt get a chance to replace em yet.

Is this likely to fit the rail/schrader valve? http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/d ... mber=92699
I know the T60 has a Bosch system, but im not sure if the valve on the rail is a bosch one.
