Sun roof won't slide...

Post by wwilme »

One of the many minor annoyances on our aging '93 is that sunroof will tilt, but not slide. Even with some coaxing, all you get is a loud tick tick noise. Don't have Haynes or Chilton, so I'm not sure what's up above that headliner. Are the two functions related? As in, am I in danger of losing the tilt (close) function right before a downpour!? Is this a common repairable problem? Well, anything can be fixed but within reason. Any advice?

And many a 240, 140 and even a 122 before those

This might help:

If you do take your sunroof apart, if you have time could you document it and I'll make a page. Thanks.

Thanks and will document with digital photos and notes. Plenty of suspension work to take car of first! Still, anyone know about the motor or inner workings that may be my problem here??

Can anyone help me manually close an open, non responsive sunroof (yea, maybe point me to the diagnosis site for why all fuses look good and this is after I've disconnected the battery)??
Thanks, Dennis

Did you ever figure this out? My wife left the accessories on and killed the battery and I jumpstarted. All systems were fine except that the sunroof/maplights/homelink were all dead. The fuse was fine. I made an appointment for the car, but she just called me and said that everything is now working???

I just had the same problem happen.
Homelink dead. Sunroof dead, even door locks dead.
Fuses fine.
Any suggestions?

Maybe a bad electrical portion of the ignition switch? Try wiggling when any of the items are not working

Keep in mind that if the sunroof does decide NOT to retract if open, there is a way to close it manually. I've had to do this with my '93 before I replaced the motor. All you need to do is to remove the plate where the overhead lights are and you will see the motor. On the spindle that turns the gearing to move the sunroof, there is a slit in which a large flat-head screwdriver will fit. With a large screwdriver, turn the spindle (which will disengage from the motor) and the sunroof will move. To re-engage it to the motor, you need to turn it the other way untill you feel it engage.

In addition, I still have problems with my sunroof (again, it's on a '93) and sometimes it will not retract when open. When this happens, I put the passenger sun visor down and give the roof a good whack where the control unit is. This is telling me that there is a bad or loose connection up there. Maybe you have the same problem...
