speedometer

Post by mtemart »

Hey Everybody,
It's me again. The ex-owner of a fast-ass 760t wagon
Just let your friends know you can actually fix things on a Volvo and all of a sudden you're the man of the hour!!!
Okay, 760 GLE speedometer/odometer doesn't work. But, all the other guages in the cluster are working fine, gas guage, tach, temp, etc. I realize there is probably going to be some hit and miss solutions to this particular problem.
Is it possible it's just the little gear or gears are stripped or maybe something wrong with the cable or if the whole unit needs replaced what other models/years can I use to replace the entire cluster panel.
Our Pick-n-Pull has several models/years on the lot so it may be possible that is the most cost efficient way to go.
Also, what about an after-market speedometer that I see advertised.
As usual, thank-you in advance.
I will probably need an illustration if somebody can point me in that direction it will be most appreciated.

I don't see any indication of what year your 760 is.

edit: I see that you have an 89 760 Turbo wagon. the speedometer and odometer are electronic getting it's signal from the ABS sensor on the rear axle. 1988-1990 Volvo 760 uses the same instrument panel. the 1991 and newer 940SE is is continued from the 1990 760. The 1992-1994 Volvo 960 is essentially the same car but with a B6304 sis cylinder engine. The 940SE is a 960 Turbo in countries other than the US. So there are parts out there.

I will have to look for a picture of this sensor. But, it is towards the center of the differential as the only one rear ABS sensor works off a sensor ring in the differential.

Do you think this is why the speedometer isn't working?
