Volvo NAV System Q's - 2002 S80 T6

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Volvo NAV System Q's - 2002 S80 T6

Post by tfbiii »

We just picked up a 2002 S80 T6 that my wife is already in love with. it only has 65k miles on it and seems rather solid.

The only issues we are having to far are with the navigation system.

First, no manual. I have gone through the normal owners manual and while it is comprehensive enough to go over both radio types for the model, there is no mention at all of the Navigation system. I assume this came with a separate manual that we don't have.

Second, the DVD's for the unit. We have what appears to be a 2007 set of DVD's. The DVD for our area is not in the DVD case, so I am assuming that is is actually in use within the Nav system. Since I do not have the manual, I am unable to glean where the DVD goes...

Third, the NAV unit apparently does not have a stable antenna connection, when I turn the unit one, it knew where I was only once and when I go to the status screen, there are constantly 0 sats listed on the GPS status page. The fact that it knew where I was one time does prove that there is SOME type of connection, although intermittent. Is the antenna built into the unit or hidden somewhere else on the car?

I am looking for any assistance or information the group can give me in dealing with the NAV system.

Thank you,

Fred

Hopefully this will help:

I don't know if your system is the same, but at the end of this video they show the DVD being put into a drive in the trunk.

IMO, if you have to buy anything from Volvo to make this work, you are probably better off buying an aftermarket system (Garmin, TomTom, etc.) instead. I just bought a nice Garmin for $130. Volvo will probably charge you more than that just for an update DVD. Sign up for email alerts @ slickdeals.net for some great prices.

I will certainly give the trunk a once-over when the wifey gets home. It seems to make some type of antenna connection when the unit is down, in stand-by, since it is able to be close to where we are, but then the antenna connection is broken or lost when the unit is open. I think if I can just get that fixed or rigged, this might have some use since the DVDs are relatively recent.

Found the NAV system. They are behind a panel on the driver's side of the trunk. It's sitting right on top of the CD changer we didn't know we had either. That seems to be non-op though, I think it's not getting power and will probably turn into it's own topic.

I did some google searches and saw a TSD that relates to the S80 CD-Changer not working. Is it worth buying into one of these TDS www sites?

Thew one I am looking at now is alldatadiy.com... I just wonder how much real info I will get out of them...

Since my issue with the NAV seems to be related to the antenna, I think I will see if I can rig up some type of replacement antenna to hook into the back of the DVD-NAV unit and see if that helps to solve the issue. I can then trunk mount it similar to a Sirius antenna.

Does anyone know who provided these units to volvo? Might help me to track down the proper antenna or whatever connectors I might need to use.

Thanks again.

Here is something strange that happened involving the NAV system:

I was trying to use my phone to navigate one day and could not get a sat lock... just like the built-in NAV. I just thought it was an issue with my phone and figured out how to get where I was going anyway.

The next day, my wife calls me that her friends Garmin will not work while it is in the car. No Sat lock. But step OUT of the car, and it works fine.

I talk her through finding the DVD unit in the truck and unplugging power.

Her friend's Garmin sprang to life and now my phone GPS works as well in the car.

Obviously there is a huge failure with the built-in unit. It must be generating tons of interfierance in order to block sat connections like that. Any sort of recall or service note that comes to mind?

I know most of you will say "Get your own Garmin" but Wifey really wants this to work and that means I have to try. LOL.

Thanks,

Fred

I am not sure I will be of any help but here is what I know. I have a 2007 S80 with NAV. On this release, the antenna is mounted on the top rear of the roof. I t receives excellent reception. The dvd drive is located in the trunk, on the left hand side with a small sliding tab behind the carpet that locks the dvd in place. The dvd for the area you wish to operate in must be in the dvd drive at all times. There are two discs, and there is also a seperate manual for the Nav system that came with the car.

It is possible that with a system your age your dvds may be scratched or damaged and may have difficulty being read. The newest release of dvd are dated 2008 and run around $150.00.
