Hey guys, this website has been a lifesaver so thank you all!

My friend not three hours ago bought a 2002 S60 AWD for an excellent price. When we just left her driveway, the transmission went into like a winter/limp mode, the dash indicator said -- and it the check engine/transmission service required lights came on. She shut the car off and restarted it to have it be fine, aside from the lights being illuminated. We stopped at Autozone and the code of P0705 came up saying that the transmission range switch had a fault. I've read that this is a simple thing to replace, however, where can I find one to replace this one, will any damage be done to the car as it's driven until the sensor is replaced, and should we look out for other problems to follow?

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!!

Don't know alot about transmission codes, are you clear as to whether the code refers to the gear shift position sensor, or the pnp switch? I think it is more than likely the pnp switch but not sure. Both are accessed by removing the air filter box to enable access down on top of the transmission, the gear shift position sensor is removed by taking off the gear shift cable and the lever from the pnp switch. There may be 2-3 screws actually holding the sensor in place as well, its connector on the other end should be found after the airbox is removed.

The pnp switch is obviously in the same place and may be a little trickier to replace as it has to be aligned when reinstalled. Volvo says there is a special tool for alignment but people have written that there are improvised ways to do it without the tool. You can probably search here or on some of the other Volvo forums and find some writeups with pictures on the replacement.

My guess is either of those parts is not something you are going to find at your local corner auto parts store. Typically Tasca Volvo has good prices on oem Volvo parts as does board sponsor MyVolvoPartsOnline, FCP Groton might have this part as well.

The car being a 2002 model should have the fluid changed if it hasn't been done recently as well as the latest software installed from the dealer. Not sure if the 02 models had the stop neutral function but if so you might check with the dealer on disabling this feature. All of the above things will help prolong your transmissions life. Good luck
