2005 S40 Oil Filter

Post by FredZ »

I changed the oil and filter on my S40 today. While the oil was draining, I removed the duct
work and changed the filter. I noticed the oil in the filter reservior had not drained out.
Is this common? I couldn't put in the new filter without spilling the old oil, so I used
a syringe to remove the old oil from the reservior. There was still a small bit of oil
left in the bottom of reservior. I didn't notice any debris or screen at bottom.
Installed the new filter and replaced the duct work.

I put in 6 quarts of fresh oil. Started the engine and let it idle for a couple of minutes.
Turned off. Checked dipstick after 10 minutes. The oil on dipsitck was about
1 quart low. I'm positive there are 6 quarts in the engine. No unusual noises from engine.

Car has 70K miles on it.

Normal for oil not to drain from filter reservior? The pan drain plug was out for 15 minutes.
I also tried pulling dip stick to see if this would drain the filter reservior but no change.

Why does dipstick show 5 quarts when there is 5 in the engine?

Is there a block in the output of the oil filter reservior? If yes, how to fix?

Thanks.

Spoke with Volvo dealer. It is normal for S40 to have oil in filter reservior, after draining oil from pan. They remove with rubber blub before installing new filter. Oil level was ok, my mistake.
