My 850 is stalling!

Post by Dan »

Recently my engine has sputtered and stalled out on me-- once when I was idling, once on the freeway (Yikes!), and today while at a stoplight.. However when I turned the car off and restarted it there was no problem. The power didn't fail (my radio was still going), all my warning lights blinked on, and the steering wheel didn't lock up... Anybody have an idea what this could be? The car has about 140,000 miles on it and seems to have been well loved and maintained (I just bought it about 3 weeks ago).

Any advice would be appreciated.

What model year is the car? Any check engine light on?

oh yeah,...94 850 turbo. And no, no check engine light.

BTW I just saw the thread on the stalling later models especially 850s. Yikes! Has a cause been found? It seems like the consensus was a dirty butterfly in the throttle valve. Is this correct? So, how would I clean the throttle valve?

Check for codes anyways and see what comes up. Codes stored may indicate the cause of the stalling. If no codes, then I would suspect the problem to be fuel related. Put the key in position II and unscrew the little cap on the driver's side of the fuel rail. Then press on the schraeder valve with a pen or something. A steady stream of fuel coming out means that the fuel pump/fuel pump relay are working. Even if that is the case though, the fuel injector relay could be faulty.

You may want to either look at the fuel pump/relay, the Mass Air Flow sensor or the ignition coil. I used to have the stalling problem on my '93 850 GLT, but since replacing the fuel pump relay and the ignition coil, and CLEANING my MAF, instead of buying a new one for $450!!, I have not experienced the stalling since. I'm keeping my fingers crossed though!! Good luck! :P

See WT850's posts in linked thread.

Cleaning mine has lasted about 40 days now.

So does that mean they are not in the same location on the engine and are not disassembled for cleaning and reassembled in a similar fashion?

The one I cleaned on my '94 850 sure seemed to be...

I had the same problem with a '94 850 and after paying my mechanic to replace the fuel pump and still having the problem I finally put a new battery in (even though it was adequately charged, it was old)...this fixed the problem and it has been 6 months. You never know!!
