Just curious to know if the 2.5 (03-04) have transmission problems like the T6 does.
What kind of things usually go wrong with these? I might look into one.
Thanks.
Do the 2.5 XC90s have tranny issues?
I read reviews and research for about a year before going with my 05 2.5T. They do NOT have the problems the T6 does. people say different things about the T6, but in my opinion they are subject to a 100% failure rate, it's just a matter of time. If you are handy on your current volvo, you should be able to fix most things that seem to be common. I also have a 94 850. The 2.5T is is essentially the same engine (with the exception that my 94 is N/A). If your V70 is the low pressure turbo it is real close to the XC90.
I have seen some issues with the rear wheel drive set up if you go with an AWD, but as far as it being a "common" problem, I think the jury is still out, it certainly isn't bad as the T6 tranny both in terms of frequency and cost. Plus from what I hear you can still drive it but only the front wheels work. Don't know how good that is long term for the drive train, but at least you don't go from everything's great to limp mode to tow truck in 2 miles.

The previous poster is right on. The 5 cyl 2WD XC90 is the least expensive version to maintain. The trans is an AW, very similar to what is in the V70/S60 5 cyls. Unless you really need AWD, do not go for it, it will only be more to repair in the future. That is of course assuming you dont live in snowy/rainy conditions, in which case it works very well, it just is more expensive to maintain. It's not a bad buy for a safe, comfortable, luxury SUV, just stay away from the T6.
