Odometer and inspection

Post by takane2 »

I realize this will vary from state to state, but in New Hampshire a working odometer is required to pass inspection. However I was wondering if being able to pull the mileage from the cluster with the 'magic volvo computer'(VST or whatever it's called) would count as a working odometer?

You should be able to pull the "true mileage" from the cluster if you know a shop that has a Volvo Scan Tool or its equivalent on a '97. Most shops have no idea where that function is in the menu but even it they can pull it I don't know how the state inspectors will deal with that. I suspect that trying to call them and ask will be actually more frustrating than standing in line for 3 or 4 hours at the DMV.

Thank God, the only inspections I deal with are on initial purchase and, for a $35.00 fee, someone "wearing" a highway patrol uniform comes out and looks for obvious signs of tampering with the VIN plates. In the past we used to have "Safety Inspections" but the Kansas Legislator soon figured out that the statute was nothing other than the "mechanics right to steal" act and promptly repealed it.

Note to Matt - we may need to compile a state by state requirements post.
