Blower motor

Blower motor

The blower motor on my 94 855 turbo started making a racket, so I have it off and it is as thought it looks like the front bearing is shot. I cant get at the bearing to take a look, as I cant find how to get the fan off - anyone know? Also an aftermarket motor with fan is upwards of $120 but just a Bosch motor is less than $100.0 ???

Also anyone knwo if you can get the bearings seperate, or is it a new motor - ( may not be worth it as it looks like the bushes arnt replacable?)

I just replaced mine two weeks ago. I bought a TYC on Ebay for $65/Free shipping. It works great and has a lifetime warranty. I had to do the reistor pack also, which I got from Rockauto for $75.

I haven't taken apart the inside of either motor I have, but I have a spare one for when the one my car claims is "dying" dies. What I can tell you is that it's better to buy the whole assembly + fan cage, because it is EXTREMELY hard to get the fan cage off and back on again.

As far as I know, none of our regular parts places any of us here go for parts sell the bearings separate.

I pulled a used one out of a junked 850 and have kept it just in case. I wish it had had ECC, and I would have stolen the blower resistor pack too.

Take the black casing out so you are left only with the motor and the cage. Find a couple of wooden blocks to support the cage 9use big ones to support the the maximun lenght of the cage perimeter. Place an old 1/4 drill bit on the center of the motor axis on the center of the cage, and tap firmly with the hammer on it.
After the axis sinks about a quarter of an inch pull the cage from the motor by hand. Try lubricating the motor bearings with engine oil. If the bearings are not too bad it will go a long way. Also you can clean motor collector with contact cleaner. After you do it, using aneedle you can clean the groves between the copper contacts. This will make the motor run better with a bit more rpms.

Slide the cage back in by hand.

Icelandic has the proper way to do it but I was lazy and just drowned the front bearing with WD-40 via the plastic extender nozzle and then plugged it back into the socket so that it would run forward and backwards several times (This is done with the housing off - holding the motor in your hand) until it shut up. I had to add more lube along the way but it eventually got quiet and it has worked fine since last summer.

Great, thanks for all the excellent replies. The only reason I wanted to get the fan off was to get the Bosch OEM part from FCPGroton, but it didn't come with a fan; the aftermarket one did but was also considerably more expensive. $75 is good for the resiter pack, all I found so far is $180 which is ludcruos, but I think I am going to need one as the blower motor cuts out when the (ECC) fan is on anything past half way.

Yeah, I definitely didn't pay that much for my resistor. But it's worth doing, since the 2 parts can play off each others' issues, and there's nothing worse than spending several hours replacing one only to find out that the other is shot, too.

Trust me, I did mine outside in a 28 degree pennsy december. Not fun at all.

Just be prepared for the fun of wedging the big bastard out, haha. I'm sure your experience won't be as hellish as mine was, given that the weather is better. I believe I got my blower motor from FCP...Bosch, I think, and it's great! Got the resistor from an independent volvo mechanic in my area. The resistor seems harder to track down, but I got lucky and they had one in stock.

Look at Boeshield T9 as well as a lubricant. It's a commercial lubricant available at Bike shops for bike chains. It might last longer than WD40 or some other form of lubricant.
