85 240 DL / how to change oxygen sensor?

Post by shotgunstallion »

My 1985 240 DL sedan just failed the carbon monoxide levels on its Colorado emissions test. My mechanic has diagnosed the problem as a non-functioning oxygen sensor. He also wants big bucks for it. I figure I can change it myself, but just where is it? Any advice on replacing this part in general? Thanks!

If you open up the hood, stand next to the right front tire and look down toward the exhaust manifold. The oxygen sensor will be on the left side of the pipe, which looks like a weird spark plug with 2 or 3 white wires coming out of it. I can't recall the exact way to remove and replace it, but you will need some sealant compatible with oxygen sensors. I have the same car and replaced mine about a year ago. Advance Auto parts sold me a cheap one for about $30 or so. Hope This Helps

Changing oxygen sensors is as easy as going to the nearest AutoZone dealer, renting one of their Oxygen Sensor socket wrenches-it's a special design that allows the wires thru- and getting the exact replacement.Use some penetrating lubricant on the threads and allow it to soak thru before working to avoid breakage[/list]
