turbo removal

Post by Burchins »

i have a 1994 volvo 940 turbo sedan. the turbo recently died on it. instead of replacing the turbo, is it possible to just take off the turbo itself and have the enging run as a normal 4 cylinder? it may sound stupid, but id rather be able to take it off and loose some HP instead of paying $1000. any ideas?

With some work and "re-plumbing" you could take the turbo off but the power will be reduced by close to 50%, making your car dangerously slow. The turbo engine is designed with lower compression, when used without a turbo the power level suffers considerably. Volvo 700 & 900 series are becoming more numerous at the auto wreckers. Keep your eye open for a servicable unit from there at a reasonable price.
