Anybody know how to fix this?

Post by nicksing3 »

Hi there-

So a couple of weeks ago my dad was fooling around with the door pin mechanism and he managed to break something. The pin had broken in half, and we were attempting to remove the half pin to replace it with a new one.

See, the key thing with my dad is that if something isn't working right, his answer is to apply more force! It didn't work out so well this time. He accidentally pulled out not only the pin, but the entire metal piece attached to it.

My question is this: How do I fix this? Does this require removing the door panel, or is there a way to get this back in without having to do that?

Thanks a lot.

It may be different on your 850, but...

The metal part, the bottom end of it (not the top plastic end) should be looped.

The looped end slips into a plastic finger that attaches to the door lock actuator.

Assuming you just kept pulling up on the top (plastic end) you may have either ripped the plastic finger off the door lock actuator. However, the metal part doesn't look looped at the end, but that could just be the camera angle. I'd find it highly unlikely that you broke off the metal loop.

Anyways, in order to re-attach you'll have to remove the door panel. There's a good write up on volvospeed.com about how to remove the door panel.

The illustration here:

makes it seem like it isn't looped at the bottom. However, the image is of poor quality, so it's hard to tell.

The guide on volvospeed.com makes taking the door panel off seem easy, but people tell me that it never comes back on right the exact same way as before. Is this true?

I have had no real trouble but it is easy to break the plastic clips (or the backer board) behind the inset trim above the door release lever. The clips are cheap but they always need to special order them from my local stealership.
