2001 S60 alternator replacement
Does anyone know the procedure for replacing an alternator on a 2001 S60 T5. Does the power steering pump have to be removed?

Yes, but you don't have to disconnect it. There are 3 bolts accessible through the pulley wheel that you will have to take out, undo the belt, and then just move it up and out of the way. The hoses should be long enough to give you good room to access the alternator.

So far I have the power stering pump free and out of the way although I did have to un-do the hoses one of them is metal and precludes me from moving the pump without having it loose. The alternator is free but i cant seem to get it out of the vehicle. The mounting bracket is sandwiched between the AC compressor mounting bracket and the engine block. It looks like i will hve to take the compressor loose unless anyone has better advice?
Thanks!
Thanks!

My alternator failed around 45K miles.
The replacement was quite expensive because it has some sort of clutch mechanism in the drive pulley.
I questioned that but was able to inspect the failed unit and verify the truth, to my amazement.
Why cannot we have a decendent of the famous Delco 10SI, 12SI, etc.?
sixvolvos, thinking that the alternator should have lasted for 150K+ miles

The best way I found out to replace the alternator is by removing the radiator fan, then move the alternator all the way to the left side of the vehicle (by the air filter) and then you might need to turn the alternator in such way to pull it out, to install it just go back in the opposite way.
Follow the steps in this video ( up to removing the housing for the timing gears. It does help to get all the reservoirs out of the way. On my tensioner pulley, there was a cap covering the 14mm nut that prevented me from releasing the tension. Pop that cap and removing the serpentine belt (Google "volvo s60 serpentine belt routing" for diagram) becomes reasonable. The two bolts facing the front of the vehicle that hold the alternator do not have to be completely removed ... just loosened and pulled out a couple of inches to permit the alternator to be pryed out of its position.

Hi guys,
The 2004 V70 will need new radiator, alternator, AC compressor soon.
Question re alternator:
- Once the Rad Fan and Radiator are out of the car, is there enough room
to slide the alternator out, leaving the PS Reservoir alone?
