Transmission Question

Post by oberdahill »

I've drained and refilled the tranny fluid at least 4 times in the past year. The fluid was a dark brown and burnt smelling at the beginning, and now it's bright red and clear. Last fluid change was this past Friday (17 June). The problem continues to persist although not all the time. When I slow to a stop, the transmission will fail to shift down all the way. When the light turns green, the engine revs up to around 2500 rpms before the the gear kicks in. Is this a solenoid problem or the beginning of the end for the tranny? Vaccuum? I haven't used any of the cleaners for the tranny, but it's a thought. Not too many independent shops either, mostly dealer work. Plan on taking the car to Hawaii in Nov 06, is it worth a rebuild? American spec units are hard to come by in Germany so a swap might too costly. Any type of solvents readily available on the continent aren't here (like Seafoam or anything on those lines).

this sounds to me like the torque converter could be the culprit.

I agree 100%. The stall speed on the N/A cars is 2350, I believe. You'll have to pull the tranny and replace the TC. While you have it out, just rebuild the whole thing. Also, replace the rear main seal while your down there.
