I have a '96 850 turbo wagon, which has a bent drive shaft. Bought the wagon last yaer with 67K miles on it, together with a 36 month 36K mile warranty. Warrenty specifies that they can replace parts with after market parts, which means their part is pricesd at approx. $250, instead of the OEM part which I understand is in the$800 range. Has anyone esle had this experience? I know that many parts which are after market, such as headlights, etc., can be exactly the same as the original Volvo part except the box will say, for example, Bosch instead of Volvo. Warranty people assure me that their part will not affect the performance - what do the experts think?

If your car was still under factory warranty, they are required to installed a VOLVO drive axle on. However...what you have is an extended warranty coverage. Under extended warranty coverage, the place where you purchased your car from will replace the any component at least cost as long it will fix the problem.

The quality of aftermarket parts varies widly, as you mention some non-OEM parts are identical to the factory, whereas some aftermarket parts are very inferior, even bordering on dangerous. Knowing which aftermarket parts are built to an OEM standard can only be gained through experience and knowledge, often only available to technicians. It is almost imposable to idently quality parts over the internet although companies like Bosch, Moog, Brembo, and some others do make high quality components
Take the info from DPAuto to ensure your choice of parts does not effect your warranty, if in doubt use OEM parts.
