2001 Volvo S40 Catalytic Converter

Post by FredJean »

My mechanic says my catalytic converter is going out. I want to replace and do the work myself to save some money.
Questions: My research on the internet says this vehicle has 2 converters - do they both need to be replaced? Can I put the replacements on using a clamp instead of welding (I don't have a torch)? Is there anyway to clean a converter without replacing? Also, in Georgia we do not have an inspection - can I bypass the converters with a straight pipe or punch a hole in them to relieve the pressure?
Thanks.
