1997 850R Performance Upgrade Recommendations?

How to go faster, stop quicker, and turn harder. Chips, exhaust, larger turbos, bigger/slotted/drilled rotors, high performance brake pads, manual boost controllers, performance shocks/struts/springs, airbox mods and more! Also discussion on HID and Xenon lights, aftermarket foglights and other exterior lighting.

1997 850R Performance Upgrade Recommendations?

Post by kingbarley »

Hello everyone, so I've had my 1997 850R (with 138K on it) for about 6 months now and have done a decent amount of research into performance upgrades for it. I've been looking primarily at the IPD reverse intercooler piping kit ($400), a 16t turbo upgrade ($400+), ipd or rica ecu upgrade ($700), and turbo downpipe/exhaust ($1,000). Now ideally I would just buy all of these things at once and have my dream car, but i'm a poor college student. So, what would be the best order to go and purchase these things in, and what would the best bang for my buck be (my money's on the ecu, but i wouldn't feel right about doing it without upgrading the cat and downpipe with it)?

Also, I found a brand new 16t for $400 on ebay, would this be a good investment since i'm pretty sure my turbo is already leaking oil?

Ecu + downpipe - then Exhaust
Stick with IPD

after that add
Turbo and intercooler with new piping.

If you run it with a tune and a downpipe through college you will keep the tailpipe noise down (less meetings with the authorities) and have a potent car.

The exhaust, turbo and intercooler will be big ticket items and are best saved for later when the cash is flowing.
