timinig chain
timinig chain
xc90 2003 100K miles plus. Why change the timing chain in advance of the timing chain going bad? and what are the odds of it going bad. I have had other volvos going 200K plus and never lost one.

They break without warning and it is an interference motor, which means it will do lots of internal damage when it breaks.

There is no timing chain, there is a timing belt. This belt has a mileage/time replacement interval. If you break this belt for any reason, your engine will bend multiple valves or worse. Ignoring the replacement interval of the timing belt is like playing russsian roulette each time you turn the key.
I just asked a volvo service rep. today what it runs to have a timing belt changed at the dealer and he said about $550.00 thats for the belt and the tensioner, "thats not counting the service" he said meaning the 105k service. And if you can find a local guy I think most of them run around $250.00 to do the belt. This price was on a 01XC70.

Its def a chain.. Takes about 7 hrs to replace and a butt-load of special volvo tools.. I dont think there is a recommended replacement interval like a belt has.. But it has a chain..
