1998 S70 performance request

How to go faster, stop quicker, and turn harder. Chips, exhaust, larger turbos, bigger/slotted/drilled rotors, high performance brake pads, manual boost controllers, performance shocks/struts/springs, airbox mods and more! Also discussion on HID and Xenon lights, aftermarket foglights and other exterior lighting.

1998 S70 performance request

Post by Guest »

I own a 1998 2.4L non-turbo S70. A little tight on cash, and a lot of heart in this prized possession of mine. I am wondering if anyone can give me any tips or procedures on how to improve the performance by spending either very little $ or none all. The little things that can be removed/modified (EX: temporarily removing air filter and tip of air induction/intake tube to have more air and on the safe side, roughly 10 extra HP) things like this that I can do. It may sound strange, but I'm only 17 and got this extraordinary car roughly half a year ago. This is why the money restriction is mentioned.
On a different note, I also would like to know if it is possible to get the T5 turbo put on, and if possible, how much I would need to save up.

I know exactly the spot your in. I am also 17 with a S70. I wouldn't go removing the air fiter completely. That wouldn't be good for the engine during a daily drive. What you can try is a K&N air filter. It should give a little bit of added horsepower. I got one for free out of a car at Crown Volvo where I work and I have noticed a small difference. However results overall for the air filter are mixed between people I talk to. Any performance upgrades for a non-turbo would also help me a great deal.

A racer I know (I know, I know, third-hand knowledge, sorry... ) ran without a filter element, and had noticeably larger bore wear than usual at the end of the season I wouldn't do it unless the car lived in a clean-room environment.
Plus, 10 horsepower is a pipe dream, unless your filter is suuuper old and crusty.

VADIS is down right now, so I can't tell you exact numbers, but I can tell you that it would probably be a better bet to just do a turbo swap. If you are hell-bent on using your current longblock, custom EMS will most likely be required if you don't want to blow it up, as IIRC the CR's are different, so the stock T5 turbo fuel computer won't be able to handle it. Figure over a grand, at least.

Try powerchip USA. They have a chip that gives an extra 10 to 15hp depending on your fuel octane.
