Volvo specialist advises against Castrol Oil - ideas please

Post by charlyW »

All of my local Volvo specialists recommend against Castrol Oil when the Volvo oil Cap recommends it does anyone know why they would be against Castrol Oils ? something about the black sludge castrol produces is this true or just from badly maintained engines ?

Complete bull...

You can use almost any oil today with no problems given that you use an appropriate oil change interval for your driving. Castrol is perfectly good oil for Volvos.

Castrol has always been one of the better oils. Especially if you are running a synthetic, or even one of the high-mileage non-synthetic oils, it's good stuff.

That's what I thought even supermarket oils will be ok. Volvo wouldn't recommend Castrol if it wasn't any good I would have thought. Mobil 1 in tomorrow found it in ASDA[Walmart] for £22 good price

Yay for Walmart!

I dunno what the US-English currency rate is currently, but if you got 6 qts for $22, I'm jealous. Mine was about $32 for everything and a filter.

That's funny I was just at my dealer today, they use Castrol exclusively.

volvo dealers here use castrol only...

i was told also that bmw uses a repackaged castrol oil .... and most of them proudly display the castrol badge

if you want to go top quality with synth or not go lubro moly or petosin or agip but at the end if you do your regular oil changes it w ont make a difference...

i am using castrol synth on a high mileage volvo and no problems whatsoever ...

the only issue I've had with Castrol oils is when Magnatec first came out in the 90's it formed a lot of foamy slude but that might have been in an old engine otherwise I like Castrol GTX along with Duckhams [not sure if thats still available over in the usa] they're more than likely the same company

I don't know if this is going on everywhere but I just paid $23.50 for a 5 gallon jug of Mobil 1- High mileage at Walmart.

I don't know how long the sale is but I am going to go back for more.

The regular 1 quart size is $6.27 regular price.

Stock up now.

Thanks again for all of you alls help with my recent problems.

Keep up the great work,

Don
