First time I've laid eyes on this forum.. I didn't know it existed. I've got a 1994 850 (non turbo) that dosen't want to start. Great strong turn over, but no fire. First thing I did when it happened about a week ago was start checking electrical. Found I've got power coming to the coil, but nothing coming out on start.
Decided it was the coil and replaced that but to no avail. I just recently found out that the car had the little diagnostic light in the front, but when I try to use it, there is no flashing code at all. The only way I can get the light on is to push the button. I've followed all the instructions I can find on using it, but it just won't work..
The closest volvo mechanic is over 2 hours away from me, and I MUST have this car running soon. I've been told that the cam shaft sensor might be bad or an ignition relay might be bad. I can't find an engine schematic to refer to to see if I can manually test these parts. I really am desperate here folks... Any help or advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

same guy
I hope I haven't done anything wrong by asking for help in my first post. I know some forums require an intro post.
Really tho, any ideas at this point would be greatly appreciated. Gotta get the kids to school and me to work in the morning!

Check for fuel at the schraeder valve on the rail first with key in pos. II. If you're getting steady fuel pressure, problem is obviously not fuel related. If not, it's something else. Are you sure you're using the diagnostic connector correctly? You have to hold the button down for about 2 seonds when doing it.

Hi,
I had a similar problem a few months ago. First i cheked all the fuses which where fine. Then I open the cover over the fuel pump in the lugage compartment. It is possible to hear the fuel pump running when turning on the ignition. However I did not hear anything and got a little worried. I measured the voltage over the fuel pump when turning on the ignition. The fuel pump recieved power, hence I made the assumption that the fuel pump where broken. One week later I installed a new fuel pump and everything is now working fine
. However the fuel pump was quite expensive
.
You can also check the fuel pump relay (dont think it's that expencive). The fuel pump relay is red and numbered 103. The Volvo part number for the relay is 9434225. To gain access to the 103 relay, you have to take the top cover off of the fuse box that is in the engine compartment. Remove the four 25 torx screws. Once the torx screws are out just lift the lid and you will see the relay.
Cheers,
Jman

Hi 850 1994 Desperate.
I have the exact same problem as you are experiencing. However, I have a 1993 850 GLT. In the past month, I have replaced the fuel pump relay, ignition coil, spark plugs and wires, had a major tune up and have cleaned my Mass Air Flow Sensor, but after $950.00 CDN in repairs, still no success. The car is currently with my mechanic and they are waiting for the car to stop turning over! The frustrating thing is this whole intermittent problem of not starting! Two different mechanics have looked at it so far, and have confirmed that the fuel pump is working and that perhaps it may be the cam shaft sensor or the ignition modulator (relay?). Once they figure out what's wrong with it, I'll be sure to let you know!

Me again
Well, the car is reluctantly at the mechanics now. They've checked the cam shaft position sensor, which was fine, and have discovered a cracked injector on the #5 cylinder. I can understand it causing a problem with fuel delivery, but would this also cause the loss of spark?
I think I'm going to print out this thread and take it to him as a list of things to check out....
Appreciate all of the replys!! Keep em coming!

A weak battery caused similar symptoms in my 1996 850 (60 month battery at about the 62nd month). How old is the battery?

Me Again
Battery was one thing I thought of first off... I disconnected mine and put the battery from my boat (brand new) in it and gave that a shot.... No dice.
