V40 CEL and code

Post by Josh1 »

Hi...I'm new to the forum and just bought my first volvo. I love it so far, but the check engine light has come on. The code is reading P0014. It says "exhaust camshaft sensor over advanced." I am wondering if this is something that I can take care of (I spend a lot of time working on older vehicles) or if it needs to go into the shop. The car is a 2000 V40 wagon with the 1.9 turbo. Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

This could be a blocked oil duct for the camshaft reset valve, a defective camshaft reset valve or low oil pressure.
Volvo recommends that the oil quality is checked first, especially for contaminants, replacing the oil if necessary.
Next step is to check the oil pressure and replace the oil pressure sensor if necessary.
If that is OK the reset valve has to be removed to check the ducts for the valve and camshaft pulley in the cylinder head for blockages. This is possibly where it stops being a DIY job as the engine has to be lifted, one engine mounting and the timing belt removed and several special tools needed to get the valve out.

So the newest development in this problem is the car will stall out when coming to a stop. Idle is about 200-300 while in drive. When the car stalls the arrow and the CEL come on. The day I bought the car I took it into have the oil changed and also did an engine flush. Put in full synthetic 5w-30. I have checked the dipstick since having this done and the oil is still clean. The oil dummy light is not coming on. Not sure if it comes on for low pressure or just for low oil. Could this problem be a result of the engine flush and maybe from sludge in the VVT? I have ordered a new camshaft position sensor to see if that will fix the problem.

The oil light is for low pressure. Years ago Volvo experimented with a low oil light but it caused so many problems it was discontinued.

The oil flush could have moved sludge around. I was taught not to do oil flushes because they can create more problems than they solve.

Latest update. Idle is still really low. After warming up the car will stall out, won't start and there is a strong fuel smell. I have cleaned the MAF, throttle body and IAC. Put in a new camshaft position sensor. Changed out the VVT gasket. Someone had put what looked like a whole tube of rvt on it and it was pretty clogged up. I checked the fuel pressure regulator and found gas in the vacuum tube coming from the bottom so I changed that out today. I have checked the oil and still seems to be clean. About 450 miles since last oil change. No warning lights coming on while warming up. Running out of money as I am unemployed and really don't want to take it to the mechanic.

Thanks
