Background: ~145k miles 2001 V40 1.9L T. Have had front end noise last couple weeks, but I work out of town and have not been able to take it into my regular mechanic at home (whom I completely trust and does a great job for me as he is a friend). Had a day off during the week and decided to try my luck with a random "Volvo Specialist" in the city I am working out of. Ends up changes out front right wheel bearing assembly and seems to takes care of noise.
Problem: As soon as I leave the shop the temp gauge is going up and down. A couple miles from the shop it redlines. Pull over, check oil and coolant, levels seem to be ok. Call the shop but the guy has gone home (happened on a Friday, claims he stayed late to finish installing the bearing assembly, wasn't too sure about his credibility to begin with as he took two full days to do repair).
No choice but to take it easy and get back to my hotel about 5 miles away, going from hot to redline the whole way. Next day start it up in the morning, let it run, it goes to normal operating temp. At park, apply throttle to 2k rpm and immediately redline. Shut off and leave.
Today I get a replacement thermostat and install. Run about 10 minutes at park, stays at normal operating temp, even when I apply throttle at park and rev to 2-3k rpm. Decide to test, drive down the street about 100 ft, redlines again, return and park it.
Fan operates ok. Don't know if shady mechanic might have done something malicious?? Maybe a bad temp sensor?? Bad water pump?
