98 v70 ABS light & shiftlock override button question

Post by samkim69 »

Hello,

I have a 98 v70 and two questions about my car.

1. I have been unable to shift my car out of park without using the shiftlock release for about 6 months. However, If i'm lucky, sometimes it works without the release button ( maybe 2 out of 10 times).

2. For last 2 months, ABS light comes on and off at times during driving or starting the engine. There is no logic to be on and off.

I read a lot of posts in the forum, and guessed it could be one of Electrical portion of ignition switch, PNP switch, ABS module
problem.

Which one should I go first?...any suggestion?

Thanks,

JRL

Yep.
Either you need a new ignition switch, a new shifter or the shifter button is either cracked is full of yuck inside.
As for the ABS nodule, this is how they start to fail, off and on for months, maybe a year until one day the light will just stay on

I would start with the ignition switch.

My car does the same thing with the shiftlock override, and (usually) if I twitch the key after it's started, I can get the shifter and lights to work again.

I've finally got a new switch coming in this week, if IPD would ever get the order out! I need to call and harass them again, they keep saying "it's on order, we've got it coming in in 2 days".

After that, there is a shiftlock microswitch in the console. It's a bit of a pain to get to.

The ABS module can be thrown into the mix sometimes as well with the ignition switch, OR sometimes it can be the module going bad. Do you feel funny sensations as if the ABS is activating while braking?

--> yes, sometimes, I feel a sort of vibration on the brake pedal while braking. then, is ABS module going bad?..

OK, I think you've got 2 separate problems here.

Before you go about removing the ABS module to send it off and/or re-solder the contacts yourself, jack up your car and take off each wheel and clean the ABS sensors. It may or may not solve your problem, but for about an hours worth of work you may save yourself a lot of trouble fixing something that doesn't need to be fixed... yet

As for the shifter, it sounds like you're going to need a new shiftlock solenoid. But first, crawl under the dash and see if you can fiddle with the adjustment of the brake light switch a bit and see if it'll start working again.
