96 850 tranny problems

My 96 850 w/130,000 suddenly started to shift hard into 2nd, and at and around 50-55mph the car keeps up/down shifting rapidly. Once at a highway speed the car is normal. Aamco wants $1300.00 for rebuild, and $400.00 for Torque Conv, plus maybe more for hard parts if they are damaged. I was just going to change oil and filter, but they said that could make it worse. All they did was a road test, no Diag test or anything. Is this normal, or am I getting raked over the coals, and is there another possible fix. Help. I am a student w/no $$$$$$$

Doesn't sound like the typical transmission failure. You having any problems with reverse? Check engine or flashing arrow light coming on?
