Wagon choices?
Wagon choices?
I've got $10,000-ish. I need a wagon. I am getting rid of my 1995 850 wagon (175,000 miles, needs A/C repair and a few other do-dad's). Thought I would just 'upgrade' to the year 2000+. What wagons are recommended? Is it only the V70 that's a wagon? Just making sure that I start the search properly. The models confuse a simple fella like me.
Confuse me too. I want to read some knowledgeable responses as well.
--I had the impression it is better to steer away from the all wheel drive models but I grew up doing rear wheel drive in the snow and ice.
---I think the transaxles suffered a bit between 2000 and 2002(?) too.

2003+ models feature improved, but more complicated, AWD systems. Most would agree that the added complication (electronic control) is more than worth it, but like any opinion, it can generate controversy and many pro/con arguments.
I'd get a 2002 or newer wagon. All V70s are wagons... V = "vagn". Any V70 or V70 XC 2001 or newer is built on the Volvo P2 platform, which is bigger than the 850. Terrible turning radius, but bigger and newer. Good pre-P2 Volvos are getting harder and harder to find.

If you're looking to spend $10K, look for either a 2003 or 2004 model. If you don't need the AWD, go for a regular V70 - they're plenty good in bad weather too. 2001 models should be avoided AT ALL COSTS, 2002's were a bit better, but still suffered from electrical and ETM problems.
The ETM, along with the AWD as Matt mentioned, was also changed in 2003 to a less failure-prone system, and NA and LPT models were bumped to 2.5 liters. I quite liked the 2004 2.5T I drove, the engine is spunky around town (something my T5 isn't), and it still has decent get-the-heck-up-and-move power to get out in 75 mph freeway traffic.
Plus the 5-speed auto is just...well, great.
