Removal and reinstallation of cam position sensor on 1996 9

Post by Blinddog »

Engine stalled while driving. Would not restart. Checked OBD code. Read PO340 indicating cam position sensor failure. I disconnected sensor from harness and checked voltage at pins 3, 2. Read same as batt 12v. Did continuity check on pin 1 (Gnd). Also ok. Now I want to remove Hall effect sensor to examine. Problem is that in the 1996 960 with the inline engine, the access to the two bolts that mounts the sensor to the cam is very tight. Questions. 1. Do I need any special tools to remove sensor, 2. Any tips on how to easily remove sensor. I removed ignition coil cover but still very tight. A lesser problem is finding a 3 pin connector since the old one disintegrated during disconnection of sensor. Would appreciate any pointers on sensor removal and names of any source for new connector.

To remove the tork bolts you have to use a socket with a wrench..similar at the posted on the link bellow

Two years ago I had the same problem with my cam sensor, but i just have problems with the conector...I try to find something that helps...

Finally I cut but ends and weld it together, and put some heat shrink to protect the conection..Be carefull to weld in the same way... NEVER HAVE PROBLEMS OR ECU LIGHT AGAIN....... (from this sensor.....)
