s70, black exhaust Topic is solved

1998 S70. Last few months have had problems of this sort: low gas mileage, bumpy ride and idle, black exhaust spitting when revved and fumes smell at stop and in cabin. Had it checked and Volvo repair put in new O sensor and MAF sensor. After three weeks Check engine light is back on and car is showing same symptoms. Anybody have any ideas?

Also, brakes keep squealing despite several rounds of pads and more than one new set of rotors. Plus when I drive up next to a building, I can hear a cyclic tinny sound, like something's scraping against something else each time the wheel goes round.

Help!

You most likely have a vacuum leak. Is the car a turbo model?

As for the brakes, it sounds like they were either not greased enough or they don't have the shims on the back. Who did the brakes?

What codes are you getting? To avoid the squeal if this is the front pads try useing VOLVO pads not aftermarket. To find an exhaust leak try an unlit propane torch. turn on and move around the engine, if there is a vacuum leak the engine will speed up when the gas is sucked in. As White850Turbo mentioned the shims on the rear, Remember the arrow on the shims face up.

The repairs were done by an authorized independent repair garage that only works on Volvos and BMWs. I've used them for a long time, they do their best to save me money.

The tinny sound could likely be the dust shield behind the rotor. If it gets bent during a repair it can rub on the rotor.

Your best bet for quiet breaks is using genuine Volvo parts. Even then the rears get dry and sometimes squeal on S70s.

I agree with the guys. The CEL is probably from a vacuum leak.
