shift lock problems '96 850 turbo wagon

Every so often (once or twice a week), I'm unable to shift out of park without engaging the shiftlock override button adjacent to the shift lever. Is this a common problem? What is the remedy and is it a "do it yourself" issue? Also, just curious, if anyone knows why when I engage the override feature, the instrument panel and turn signals do not power up?

Thanks for the reply. Everything I need, including detailed digital photos, was there under http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/microswitch.php. The problem seems to be fairly common.

I remember when I had this problem for a couple of weeks years ago and then bam, magically, it just went away... Go figure. '94 850 n/a
