Hello everyone,
I finally bought a nice clean Volvo V70. I originally was looking at a 2002 V70 XC but had trouble getting the bank to buy the deal- they said they wanted "more equity" in the car. So I found a straight V70, no AWD, no turbo- it really fits our needs perfectly, and at a much better price than a XC. I checked the tranny fluid, smells normal, no leaks, just a little noise from the power steering pump, which loks easy enough to replace. I bought the car (it has 87,000 miles) for just under $8,000, and I think I got a hell of a deal. I'll be sure to send that dealer as much business as I can.
Now I'm eager to tackle maintenance issues, and would welcome your suggestions...
Thanks!
I just bought a 2002 V70!

Replace all the fluids with sythetics, repalce the filters, do a tune up and replace the timing belt and components if needed or if last time changed is unkown.

Hello, JDS60R speaks the truth. a few additions: The cabin air filter is not a perfect rectangle. One of it's sides cuts in a bit. Take note of it (just hit it with a crayon) as you remove it so you don't have to waste time scratchin' your head. Make sure the drain hoses of the A/C system are clear. Give your brakes a look. Look at the plastic rocker panels. My car was well cared for and loved for 69K but half of my plastic rocker rivets were missing. Yes you can get them from Volvo or just go to an auto body supply shop. Remember to use a JWS3309 transmission fluid. Toyota Type-IV fluid is the easiest one to find and just like the expensive Volvo fluid and the Mobil 3309, it's not a synthetic. If you buy a synthetic fluid BE SURE that you're getting the new stock which has been updated to include the JWS3309 standard. There are old bottles of Mobil1 syn. trans. fluid, as well as other brands, which aren't 3309. Also, our brakes take DOT4 fluid. IIRC DOT5 is a no go-double check that. Chech the exhaust system mount which is at the rear axle-it is frequently gone. When you change the plugs use only the 5-pack of 3 prong plugs from Volvo-they work-they're cheap-they last 60K-site sponsors sell them. When you place an order from FCPGroton or IPD or Eeuroparts or anybody else buy a dozen aluminum crush washers and be done with it. They fit the oil drain and transmission drain. You'll love owning a non-turbo every time you buy REGULAR gas for it. Once in a blue moon you'll feel the lack of oomph getting on a highway. It's where the great highway mileage comes from. I get 28.75mpg on the highway-with an automatic. If I lived in the High Southwest or the Rockies I might want a turbo. Good Luck, Kira
Thanks to all for the advice...I will be refilling fluids with synthetics. I was pleased to see that Volvo has 5,000 mile service intervals, like my Toyota. The kids love the third row seats, and they like exploring the car. We found built in booster seats, a little pop up table, etc.
Thanks again for taking the time to offer your suggestions!

Incorrect, Volvo's service interval on '01 and newer cars is 7500 miles, not 5000 miles. So if you indeed are going to synthetic oil, then 6-7k miles oil change is more appropriate.volvoCLE wrote: I was pleased to see that Volvo has 5,000 mile service intervals, like my Toyota
