P0422 fixed

Post by matthew1 »

Today I noticed the Check Engine light was off. It had been on -- set by a P0422 code -- for about two weeks.

Last week I changed out an old, cracked vacuum hose and tightened, tweaked, twiddled, twisted, tuned and turned anything I could find in the engine bay.

Because this code is somewhat ambiguous, I couldn't "go after it" unless I wanted to spend time and money on it. Which of course I didn't. Never do. So I practiced what I preach, which is to start with the simplest, easiest, most logical solution attempt first.

In this case it was trying to find a simple vacuum leak, or one of the dozens of little connections that come loose in our 850 engine bays. I was lucky -- something I did took care of it. I don't know if it was the vacuum line or not. The next step would have been doing more research on the code, and might have led to a new O2 sensor. Not a difficult job, but $100 for the part.

The cracked hose was the Yellow hose here:

P0422 = 4-4-3 THREE-WAY CATALYTIC CONVERTER EFFICIENCY

----------

Trouble Code Conditions

The engine control module (ECM) continuously monitors three-way catalytic converter (TWC) efficiency by comparing the signal from the rear heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) with the signal from the front heated oxygen sensor. When three-way catalytic converter efficiency deviates too much the engine control module stores diagnostic trouble code (DTC) EFI-443.
Substitute value(s)
- None.

Possible source(s)

Uneven compression.
Air leakage in the intake system.
Air leakage in the exhaust system.
Faulty fuel pressure.
Defective three-way catalytic converter.

---------

Not listed there is the possibility of the rear O2S being faulty, now I dont see many Volvo's in my shop and have not yet had to diagnose this one, but on most other manufacturers the rear O2 is the cause about 60% of the time.

hopefully your vacuum leak was the source.

Thanks for your input. I'll post back if it comes back.

One thing that did ease my mind when the code came up was that my mileage was steady. A bad O2 sensor usually triggers a rich fuel/air mix, which degrades mileage significantly, at least it did when I had a bad oxygen sensor many years ago..

Well...the rear one doesn't, it just tells the computer to yell at you

But in that plane of thought, I'm thinking I need to replace my front one because my gas mileage is going downhill for no apparent reason. I'm struggling to get 26 on the highway, even using 93 without AC.

It's either that, or the wastegate/IPD TCV adjustment letting the turbo push more air through. Hmm.

Correct, it's simply a monitor used to detect cat efficency with no affect on A/F ratio.
