passenger door lock actuator

Post by johnm »

Dear Friends,
I have a 1998 S70. The power actuator on the passenger side locks the door (some of the time) but never unlocks the door. The levers on the actuator move but it is like a spring or something is missing. It also does something strange. When you try to unlock or lock the door initially there is more torque and the levers move further. The more you try to lock or unlock it the levers travel a smaller distance. Puzzled and want to know how it works or supposed to work. Thanks,
John

Hi John,

The lock actuator and switch are electric and can wear out over time.

The best way to diagnose the issue is to remove the door panel and check the lock actuator for voltage when you actuate it with the switch.

If you have a good ground and voltage at the actuator when pressing the switch then the actuator is at issue.
If you do not get voltage and ground when you press the switch then the switch is at issue.

Does it perfrom the same way when you use the lock/unlock switch on the passenger side?

I know they have intermittant window switches.

Hope that helps,
John

Same thing happened to me. It was a bad door lock actuator. Door Actuator is about $125 or so online.
Use only Volvo part.

Look under "Front Door", "Lock Hardware".

Or Google for "Volvo 8628224".

1. Remove INNER Door Panel.
2. The Door Actuator is right there, very easy to replace, just watch the existing setup and replace it.

Do a search and you will find some DIY here or at volvospeed.com

Thanks Guys,
I will check the voltage first. As far as the drivers side, that was replaced recently. I was also wondering....the rear passenger left and right also work intermittently but mostly not. Is there a master relay somewhere to supply voltage to all? Or are all these actuators probably bad too?

The lock motor/latch mechanism is the part of this system that does all the work.
The actuators just wear out after a decade or so. Fact O Life...
I seriously doubt that there are any other issues here.
You probably just need a new one.

I've only had to replace one at this point. It died at about 95K.
Considering what kinda shape 60's, 70 and 80's cars used to be
in at this age and mileage, these Volvos hold up pretty well! :)

So today my son opened my passenger side door when it *looked* locked. I wonder how long it's been like that. lol
After reading these threads I've determined it is the actuator.
Some parts sites list a location specific actuator, others say it will work anywhere.
Can anyone tell me if I need a front passenger lock actuator specifically or if any that corresponds to my model/year work?
Thanks!

You need a Right Hand Passenger actuator with cable. You can get it on the site that advertises on this web site. It says a 10% discount but turns out to be 5%. I'll take what I can get.... I am about to order one myself.

Oh, and you need to order the turbo or non-turbo version. (for example my car is a 1998 S-70 non-turbo) The site will guide you in the right direction. The price with shipping should be around $135.00. It is a new volvo part. You can also look on e-bay but there are limited guarantees and you are not always sure of what you are getting for a cheaper price.
Hope that helps you. John
